Who are we?
We are a personal parish, that is, we don’t have specific geographic boundaries, like a local Catholic parish does, but rather membership in a personal parish is based on a personal choice of our parishioners to join us. So, we welcome people from all over the wider Perth region who want to worship with us and be part of our community.
We are the Perth-based community of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross, which is a particular type of jurisdiction within the Catholic Church. An ordinariate is equivalent to a diocese, but is not confined to specific geographic boundaries within the territory of the Australian Bishops' Conference.
When did we get started?
Our Parish of Saints Ninian & Chad was created at the same time as the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross, in 2012.
The Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross, for Australia, was erected by Pope Francis on 15th June 2012. It is one of three Personal Ordinariates were created after the Apostolic Constitution, Anglicanorum Coetibus (Groups of Anglicans), of Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. The two other Personal Ordinariates are in the UK (Our Lady of Walsingham), and the USA, which also encompasses Canada (The Chair of Saint Peter). The Personal Ordinariates are governed by the Code of Canon Law of the Catholic Church, and the special Complementary Norms, which were updated in 2019.
Why are we here?
Our mission is both to evangelise, and to provide a particular ministry to those who have come into, or who are seeking to come into, full Communion with the Catholic Church from the Anglican, or Methodist traditions.
What do we do?
We provide a spiritual, pastoral and liturgical ministry within what we call the English Patrimony. That means our Masses and other Services express a spiritual, pastoral and linguistic approach that has been forged over the centuries from Christianity's encounter with the peoples of England, both before and after the time of the Protestant Reformation. In 2015, Pope Francis promulgated our special Ordinariate Form of the Mass, the Missal of which is called, Divine Worship: The Missal. Our Mass uses a more traditional form of English, and incorporates many of the prayers that came out of the English Medieval Catholic, and the English Protestant traditions, especially the Rite of Sarum, and the Book of Common Prayer.
Where are we located?
Our Liturgical life is centred around Saint Paul's Catholic Church in Mt Lawley, Perth, Western Australia.
Our frequent meetings and ministries are either conducted at the Catholic Pastoral Centre in Highgate, or at St Paul's, or in Small Groups at our Presbytery in Dianella, or at the homes of our parishioners.
